History of Bryant Park
In 1847, Reservoir Square was established in the space that would later become Bryant Park. Reservoir Square held its first exhibition in 1853. However, in 1856, due to the American Civil War, the exhibit got burned down and was used as a military drill site. Several renovations were scheduled from 1871 onward, and in 1884, ‘Reservoir Square’ was officially changed to Bryant Park.
Many attempts to renovate and bolster the park did not come to fruition in the following years. The Bryant Park Restoration Corporation took over in 1980 and set out to transform the area into a tourist attraction. By the time the Park finally opened in 1992, it became a hit amongst locals and visitors.
