We got at Hotel Roemer exhausted from a long trip only to find that the rooms were overbooked. We even had emailed beforehand to confirm our reservation and to notify them that our arrival will be late at night, and they responded to us that it was no problem. But there definitely was a big problem!
We were relocated to their sister hotel, which they suggested us to stay for all of the 3 nights we had booked. Because one of the main reasons we chose Roemer was their location, we decided to come back the next day. Then I found that my friend in Amsterdam had left some gift for me at the hotel reception, but they never mentioned about it at the time of check-in. The reception did give us the gift from my friend on the next day, but I doubt I would ever have received it if I continued to stay at their sister hotel.
As a compensation the hotel offered us free breakfasts, and we accepted. However, at check-out, they tried to charge us for the breakfasts, and we had to explain them about this overbooking issue.
I don't recommend Hotel Roemer. You can't trust their reservation system or reception staff.
