I loved the bluegrass and gospel music jamboree that they had on Thursday night.
1-night trip

2/10 Poor

I arrived at 2:45 pm and no one there. Called staff and got answering machine. Finally left at 3:20.

4/10 Fair

The owner and the desk person were very nice but the hotel smelled of cigarettes and there was no hot water. Was told to let it run for 5 minutes and it would be fine. Let it run for 10 with nothing. Since we were going hiking it wasn’t a huge deal but a shower would have been nice.

Really looked promising from the outside and had lots of good reviews. Come to find out, this place caters to hikers of the Appalachian Trail which is where the good reviews come from. We ended up checking out after a few hours at a rehearsal dinner elsewhere and just driving the hour and 15 minutes home for the night because the room was so poor. Bed was squeaky and you could feel the springs underneath. Walls were stained and some in the hallway were lacking paint. The whole place including our room smelled musty and smoky. Toilet and tub need replaced or resurfaced. Both were badly stained. There was no way we could have comfortably stayed the night here. Total waste of time and money.

Great historical inn. Very pretty building outside and in. The owner is super friendly and will tell you all sorts of information about the place, as he is the one that saved it and restored it. He’ll also play you a song on his restores juke box. Room was nice and clean. Air worked well. Bed was firm but comfy. Softest towels ever! Only issue was it took awhile for the shower water to get hot (maybe it was just a fluke that night), and it would be nice to have an individual coffee machine/cups in the room. Other than that, great stay.

Very run down on the interior. Beautiful on the outside. No safety locks on room doors.

Property owner was very kind and accommodating. He is in the process of remodeling to make it even nicer. Loved the history and the historical feel of the place. We definitely felt welcome. Room cool and clean

Fun and friendly welcome at check-in. Surprise demo of 1947 juke box music by the inimitable Ella Fitzgerald. Lots of info about local area. Interesting history of Inn.

Very interesting proprietor. Knows a lot about the area. a bit unorthodox in his approach but has a vision.

Would love to stay there again anytime.

We arrived super late. But there was someone to take care of us and provided wonderful accommodations. This place should be o. The National Historic Register! Very friendly staff and we cornered the Inn proprietor and got to hear a lot more of the history which was very cool. The town lights and decorations for the holidays made it extra special.

Room was pretty tight - 2 beds, a night table, dresser and a TV. Did have a mini fridge. Bathroom & shower in particular was very small. It was comfortable enough and fine if you’re hiking, hunting or fishing the area. They have dinner & local music every Thursday that I missed unfortunately but sounds like fun. Beautiful part of Virginia too!!

Cozy and friendly

Hotel is a nice place and I would recommend to anyone passing through. Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. Owners are very friendly and helpful with directions to areas around the area. The room are a bit dated but it adds to the experience. I would definitely stay again. The area around the hotel has a very small town charm and the creek leading in is beautiful. There is also a duck pond with a beautiful small waterfall.

Noisy uncomfortable and sketchy. The smoke detector was beeping all night because the battery was low. Got some sleep by plugging my ears.

A grand old place! I arrived late, and my key was sitting out for me, along with a hand-written map showing how to get to my room. Definitely an olde-timey feel to this hotel, but comfortable and secure. The plumbing could probably stand to be upgraded a bit, but really, that added to the charm. Wifi was great. Some friends were staying at a well-known hotel, which shall remain unnamed, up a nearby mountain, where there's no air conditioning! Imagine! I was VERY happy to have chosen the MacArthur Inn!

Character

The Hotel was nice building with character but it could use some TLC

Water took forever to get hot, no in room phone, no hair dryer in room. Found out only 2 hair dry dryers for the entire inn.

Quaint but unexpected upcharge for booking online.

Quaint hotel. The staff, and especially, Allen, the owner, were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was a bit confusing when we asked if there would be coffee or breakfast available in the morning and did not receive a straight answer one way or the other...there wasn't so we ended up at Burger King. Not a whole lot in the immediate area within walking distance. HEADS UP! They charged an extra $8.50 dollar fee per room (over what was stated on my hotels.com receipt) for booking through hotels.com! This took me by surprise as I have never paid this type of premium before and not been advised by hotels.com that it would be assessed. I will be following up with hotels.com to understand why this happened.

Not much in the town, but the owner was extremely personable and fun to talk to. Good place if you just need a place to stay for the night when passing through.

Love it here

Everything was perfect upon arrival. Check in was swift and easy, and they had a bunch of recommendations of things to do and how to hike the trail. Welcoming town and friendly community. Loved my stay.

A delightful escape from chain hotels

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. The building is old but has great character. The room was simple but furnished with antiques giving it a home like feeling The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was clean everything worked, the towels we're soft. The desk clerk was friendly and helpful. And the climate control was good. Finally the town is nestled in the beautiful New River Valley.

Nice old hotel with history

I found staff was nice, the gentleman with a great mustache knew the history of the building. I had large room, nicely done. I look for good access - not far beyond Blacksburg, off the freeway, over the overpass bridge, right there. I want clean rooms and linens - very nice; I want a nice comfortable bed - which I had. Wi-Fi was very good, TV was excellent. Double pane windows meant the room was fairly quiet. With this hotel, I was looking for an Older but Renovated Hotel with it's charm, and this had it - Very nice woodwork, great history, nice building. I had read the reviews, and there were mostly good with a couple not so. Like most old buildings, I did have to wait for the water to heat up in the morning, and there were some creaks, but overall I thought it was excellent renovated Hotel. Another thing to consider was the price was very reasonable, and the other hotels I had on the trip at that price point were really not very good, while this one was.
