After the 50-minute drive from the highway, in 2d gear nearly all the way, I was hopeful that Macaw Lodge would provide everything we needed so that we needn't drive at all while there. This proved true. Staff was welcoming, coming out to meet us and carrying our luggage to our room. They were helpful and generous at every turn; Alvin found us out walking and offered a tour, with tastings, of the fruit orchard and vegetable gardens. The grounds are beautiful, with gardens thoughtfully planted. We purchased the full-board plan, and the food was very good and plentiful. Our room in the lodge was very comfortable, though if we were staying for longer than a couple nights, we'd probably want to rent one of the cabins to have a little more space. Our room offered large screened windows overlooking the ponds below, perfect for a couple of birders wanting to see birds coming to the pond. Birding was good right around the lodge, with a large variety of species coming to a couple of fruiting trees right above the parking lot. NOTE: the Googlemap directions linked to the website send you up Rt. 320 if you are coming from the northwest - this road is significantly rough, potholed, and slow going for much of the way. When we left, we asked a couple of fellows in the nearest town which way to go to get to a coastal town southeast of Jaco, and they directed us down a different road that was MUCH smoother and more pleasant, and came out at Jaco. Worth taking!
