Highly recommended. The house's owner: Hiro-san was super friendly, welcoming and amazing guy! During our check-in, he found out it was our very 1st time visiting Ishigaki island so he gave us a very detailed guide & recommendations including: sunrise/sunset time, precautions for the ocean, island geography, etc. Best condensed 15-mins Ishigaki guide from a person living there that beats everything you could find online!

a relaxing accommodation in a coastal village
The accommodation situtation close to the bus stop and the beach. There's a little farm in front of it, I like to see the goats and pig "pigumi"! Very quiet and relaxing environment is perfect for escape from noisy city life! There's a great BBQ place and roof top to enjoy the starry night (if there's clear sky)!

Highly recommend to those who are on a budget
My friend and I stayed in a private room with two twin beds. There's plenty of storage room and srawers to organize your things in the rooms and in the common areas so you don't have to take your amenities back and forth from the showers, vanity, and kitchen areas. This two story has a common area downtstairs and one on the second floor outside. There a kitchen downstairs and on the second floor. Everything is provided. Take your own towel unless you don't mind paying a small price to rent one. Laundry is free(soap for under ¥100). The manager, Hiro, is ichiban!!! Very helpful with info and considerate.

Hiro-san is the reason to stay at the Friend House
Hotel manager Hiro was very helpful with his advice and guidance of the island. Great for first timers to the island and young people trying to save a buck or two.

Our wonderful stay
Considering the price, the stay at this hostel was very neat and comfortable. The roof balcony had some chairs and we could look at the stars from there; the view of the sky was beautiful. Rules and ways to use the facilities such as bathroom and kitchen were listed, so we could use those places without problems or uncertainty. Since other people were saying on the review that the schedule that the owner Hiro made was wonderful, we decided to not make any plans on our own at all and ask him to make one for us too...and the schedule he made was perfect! He introduced places that wouldn't be on guidebooks and the trip became very memorable. I would love to stay here again if I have a chance to visit Ishigakijima one more time.

Basic facilities, fantastic staff
Had a fantastic stay. Accommodation is on the basic side but better than you pay for. Owner is super nice and incredibly helpful - will go above and beyond to help you get the most out of your trip to the island. Can't recommend this place enough!

Amazing stay at Shiraho Friends House
I stayed for 5 nights in the girls dorm room at Shiraho Friends House. I really enjoyed my stay here. Hiro was an amazing host and he provided so much information on the area, sightseeing and restaurants. It is a very friendly hostel with a nice common area and outdoor area upstairs. I highly recommend staying there and I hope to return again soon!

The place to go if you want insider info
Very helpful and informative owner, with loads of advice about what to see and do and how to get there. The kitchen and bathrooms are clearly marked with signs in both English and Japanese for guests to figure out things like how to work the wonderfully comfortable Japanese toilets and to make sense of the recycling system. The upstairs terrace and roof space are lovely for stargazing and there is a kitchen available for cooking. There is not much going on around the area of the hotel, but the owner will help you hire a car from across the road to tour the island and/or the bus stop is a very short walk away, making travel around the island very easy! The only complaint would be that the beds were a bit hard and squeaky for my liking, but other than that, we really enjoyed our stay!

Great Experience
Staying here was great! Hiro-san is a huge help. Right when you get there, the staff sits you down and tells you all about Ishigaki and the things you can do and the best spots to go. He planned out our whole first day. Since I'm a student, he also gave my friends and me a student discount.

Good location close to airport
Expedia had a glitch in their booking system. I was unable to book & pay for a single private room. Instead I paid a dorm room price for a private room. Obviously not a sustainable business scenario. They were very gracious & explained that although they couldn't accommodate me, there was a guesthouse nearby that I could stay, for the same price, with a private room. They took me there. It was great! "Guesthouse Pakira" Highly recommended!

Discover hidden Ishigaki!
This is a great place to stay for travelers who are interested in exploring Ishigaki off the beaten track. The owner of the guesthouse, Hiro, is absolutely amazing with offering tips and advice for what to do while on the island (and the surrounding islands). He even helped us rent a car so that we could get around more easily. The guesthouse itself is in a great location, a very small village that nevertheless has several wonderful restaurants (we went to one of them three times during our five day stay). While it might feel a bit dorm-room like, the family rooms are private with their own balcony, which are perfect for enjoying tea and coffee in the morning while watching the ocean.

Friendly owner who provides good advice
We enjoyed our stay at Shiraho. It was a good opportunity to explore the quiet beaches and lovely restaurants of the little village. If you are staying here though, I would recommend an international driver's license as it is a bit isolated and you will need to catch the slow bus system into the town if you want to go other places. The facilities were clean. It's best for those on a tight budget. I would caution a stay if you are sensitive to noise. It is very much a backpacker's hostel and the walls are paper thin. We were lucky to have respectful guests who kept the noise down but it could be a problem with another group. Our room was also directly opposite the kitchen so we were woken up early with people using the facilities.

Hiro makes the difference
To be clear, this is a two star hostel, with thin futons, shared bathrooms and sometimes shared rooms. There are both dorms and private rooms. Walls are very thin, and noise made by late arrivals can be considerable. I am over 60, and most of the other guests were in their 20's. But the manager, Hiro, gives 5 star service, and I am very happy that I stayed here. He helped rent a car, and gave directions to some of the most beautiful secret beaches, reachable only through sugar cane roads and a brief walk through the jungle. In fact, he helped plan my whole day. I stayed 3 nights, and I would stay here again, and I do admire the spirit of the young travelers.. Great breakfast for 350 yen.
