We arrived early, hoping to check in, but the front desk agent—who was on a smoke break—told us we’d have to wait. I mentioned that I’m a VIP and that my booking included early check-in, but she dismissed it and suggested we go into town for lunch and return later. After doing so, we were eventually allowed to check in about 30 minutes early. We were also eligible for a complimentary room upgrade. Judging by the number of empty parking spots, it was clear the hotel wasn’t fully booked. When we returned an hour later to inquire about the upgrade again, we were told the only available upgrade would be to a suite, which wasn’t offered to us.
The room we were given had a strong musty smell from the moment we walked in. We had to keep the door open as much as possible for the entire three-day stay just to air it out. We had also hoped foot any kind of upgrade to a balcony or the 2nd floor but it wasn’t to be.
A cyclone passed through during our stay, which knocked out power for about 14 hours. The hotel did offer a complimentary breakfast with toast, jams, cereal, etc., which we appreciated during the outage.
Later, once the storm had eased, we asked the front desk if we could borrow umbrellas to go for a walk. We were told not to bother, that the umbrellas would just turn inside out, and were advised to wear jackets with hoods instead. Surprisingly, they refused to provide any umbrellas at all.
