Asama Onsen

Asama Onsen wraps you in 1,300 years of hot spring tradition just a quick trip from Matsumoto. Steam rises from mineral-rich waters while historic ryokans with curved tile roofs nestle among forested hills. Traditional bathhouses like Asama Onsen Kaikan offer authentic soaking experiences, and walking paths wind through otherworldly steam vents near the cultural landmark of Asama Shrine. Traditional kaiseki dining features seasonal mountain vegetables and river fish, primarily at ryokans where meals come with your stay. Most visitors arrive by car as public transit is limited, but the compact resort area is pleasant for walking despite some steep terrain. Richmond Hotel Matsumoto

10/10 Excellent
"Richmond Hotel Matsumoto was a wonderful surprise. As a budget-friendly business hotel, we weren’t expecting much—but it turned out to be far nicer than anticipated. The room was spotlessly clean, with a comfortable queen bed and a divan-style sofa that made for a perfect little reading nook. The breakfast buffet was simple but satisfying, with enough variety to suit even a finicky Western palate. Its location is excellent—convenient to the train station, restaurants, and shopping—making it an easy base for exploring. Matsumoto itself is a lovely city that feels a bit under the radar for international travellers, yet it offers so much charm. It’s also an ideal staging point for trips into the Japanese Alps or the Kiso Valley. All in all, a great option if you’re looking for something budget-friendly without feeling bare bones."

Wat Hotel& Spa Hida Takayama

10/10 Excellent
"We had a fantastic stay at Wat Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Takayama. The location is super convenient—just a short walk from the station and within easy reach of the old town, which made exploring really easy. The rooms were surprisingly spacious (especially compared to typical Japanese hotels), very clean, and incredibly comfortable. One of the highlights was definitely the onsen and spa facilities. They were beautifully maintained, relaxing, and such a nice way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I also loved the option of private baths—it made the experience feel even more special. A really standout moment for us was arriving to find a thoughtful honeymoon setup in our room, including a handwritten-style card, flowers, and balloons. It was such a lovely surprise and made us feel genuinely welcomed and celebrated—such a special touch that we didn’t expect. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay, and everything felt very well organised. The breakfast had a good mix of Japanese and Western options and was a great way to start the day. Overall, this hotel offers amazing value for money with great facilities, comfort, and location. We’d absolutely stay here again!"
