The hosts and staff made this a particularly pleasant and unique stay. They were very attentive and helpful. A delicious Traditional Japanese Dinner and breakfast were served to us in a private room. There are public and private bathhouse options- all of which were very clean, comfortable, and relaxing!

The service and attention to details were top notch. The owner/manager was very helpful and with his help we were able to go to Kamikochi by public transportation even though it was closed. We really wanted to do this so his help was much appreciated. We did not have breakfast but the dinner was very good and served by these nice attentive ladies which we really enjoyed. The ryokan is more traditional which worked for us in the remote mountains. The view from the spacious lobby area was very pretty.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Sansui. Our host was excessively kind and the stay was great. We particularly enjoyed the private baths, especially the larger one which is tucked away.

The hotel is easy to get to from Matsumoto by bus on a very scenic ride. We were collected by the hotel manager from the bus stop. This is a very sleepy village, though we ate at two very good restaurants. The hotel has seen better days (not really a Ryokan). However two major highlghts: were their evening meal which was was brilliant, incredible course after course in a private dining room. Equally, the experience of sitting in their hot pool looking at the mountains was very memorable. Catching the bus down to Takayama was easy at the end of our stay.

Lovely Owner/Manager!
Off the beaten path, and probably best suited with a car (which we rented), but also accessible by bus/taxi. Owner/Manager was SUPER nice and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were unique and tasty, and reasonably priced. Very close to Kamikochi, and a few dining options nearby by car (and possibly an itzakaya across the street...if the owner is not napping 😆). 3 lovely private onsens on-site, too, plus 2 public for M and F. Nice alternative to western hotels with tatami mats and a lovely view of the mountains.

We felt very taken care of. The property has not seen renovations since the early 70s, I suspect. It actually adds to the charm of the place.

This was a delightful surprise. It is a 40-min bus or taxi ride up from Takamaya and is well worth the trip out and back. We stayed longer here than most other hotels. We will remember this one for its charm, the kindness and cooking skills of the owner and family, and the nearby ryokans that provide the best lunches, Cafe mokkamokka, and Ryoken Tonoyashi (sp ?)- the Sansui people will tell you which one. This dinner spot provided the most delicious simple and AMPLE dinners for much less than we spent elsewhere on our 3-week trip. Definitely, we'll come back. The walks into and around the mountains were breathtaking. We made sure to do a pre-lunch and pre-dinner walk up and down a short span of the main road. As a ryoken, the usual pajamas provided by hotels the Sansui provided were a full kimono and jacket suitable for men and women. We wore these to the one dinner we had at Sansui - private dining room, and it was a hoot. The food was amazing, and highly traditional consisting of about a dozen small plates and 4-5 larger plates. Great value for excellent and abundant servings. The mountains at the start of spring are beautiful. We picked a good time. This is a retro 60s ryoken. So know that as such it has everything, including a throwback to ski resorts of that era, but misses slightly on wifi only in the lobby. Still, we met other friendly travelers all cranking into wifi and telling stories.

The surrounding of the ryokan is very picturesque and peaceful. The onsens are lovely. There are gender-specific public onsens as well as private onsens that you can reserve. The ryokan itself is a bit dated though.

An incredible stay!!
We loved, loved our stay here. The onsen was wonderful (four outdoor private, a male and female onsen, both indoor and outdoor). The breakfast was incredible and they made gluten free for my wife (celiac). (No dinner, just breakfast). They even noticed she liked lemons in her water and provided those each day. The staff was wonderful and so helpful (didn't speak much English but enough to get by!) The building interior is outdated, but not in a bad way once you get used to it. It's traditional Japanese - tea, slippers, robes, breakfast, futons (we doubled ours up to make them more comfortable) on the floor, tatami mats. In a small town with hiking nearby, only one place to eat (walking), a small morning market and other onsens. The bus comes right through town (a couple minutes from the ryokan) and can take the bus all over - transportation in Japan is on point. We had a wonderful, restful and adventurous stay! Would absolutely go back and would highly recommend if you're looking for a traditional experience.
