Japanese style accommodation with great service
We stayed at Pension Alice to add a few days on to a Niseko ski trip. As the location is out of town and we didn't have a car we relied on the (very friendly) proprietor to drive us up to Hirafu Welcome Centre and back each day - this works fine as long as you aren't expecting to be at the very front of the lift queue in the morning or to do loads of night skiing. Also in the evening they gave us a lift in and we got a taxi back (Y700) or walked (15 minutes from Hirafu Intersection/Seico Mart, reasonably well lit). The Western style twin room is clean, compact but not cramped with comfortable beds (though not enough pillows, as usual for Japan). The shared showers are clean, hot and powerful and the (inside) bath filled to a comfortable temperature in the evening. WiFi is fast and strong everywhere we were in the building. Breakfast is Japanese style (meat, fish, noodles, rice, eggs, soup) with plenty of variety and a few European pastries - the rhubarb jam was excellent. Most of the other guests were Japanese but we didn't feel out of place and the wonderfully friendly staff made us feel very welcome. Definitely recommended, especially if you're hiring a car.
