The hotel itself was excellent for the price. I was in Kyoto for a business convention and wanted a nicer private room than I typically would stay in and it was that. Lots of amenities like a kitchen, refrigerator, high-tech lighting, deep soak bath, nice air conditioning/heating system, etc. Everything was modern and clean and the beds were comfy too.
My only complaint with the room was that there wasn't a lot of floor space or seating so I ended up just using the other bed as my table and couch. I imagine it would have been a tight if you actually had 3-4 people in that room instead of just 1.
I liked the location too, maybe not the most convenient place but it had a lot of charm and was easy enough to take the bus or walk to wherever I needed to go. Nice and quiet at night too!
The weirdness comes in about 3/4 of the way through my stay. I was notified by the staff that I'd have to do early check-out several days before my reservation ended without much explanation. The next day I find out that apparently the owner hadn't been paying the rent so the hotel was closing down. One of the staff took me to another nearby hotel and paid for the new room. It wasn't as nice but I suppose decent enough considering the circumstances (although I want a partial refund for the inconvenience and downgrade).
Overall I feel sorry for the kind staff who lost their jobs because of the owner's negligence! Leaders need to take responsibility!
