This hotel is a good example of a decent property with a few flaws that wouldn't be a big deal if the owner were more customer service-minded. The room itself was clean and fine, pretty spacious and well appointed. The mattress was very cheap, it felt like a trampoline, but the sheets were clean. The bathroom, while clean, literally hasn't been touched […] since what appears to be the 1970s and desperately needed updating. The walls weren't that soundproof but we were able to sleep. This all would have been fine except for the big problems we found: a) the wifi which is advertised strongly, didn't work for us the entire time we were there. The owner claimed it was because our computers were from the USA but we've been traveling all over New Zealand and Asia for 6 months and never had this problem. He didn't do anything but shrug his shoulders. b) our room wasn't made up the entire time we were there. After returning from our day out, we found our bed unmade, the dishes unwashed, and nothing touched at all except for our towels, which had been folded. c) The biggest problem for us: at 9:50am on the day we were leaving, our phone rings and the owner says that we have to be checking out at 10am. We told him we needed about 15 extra minutes and he said no. We asked him if someone was checking into our room, he said no, and then admitted that all the other rooms in the hotel were recently vacated as well but even so we needed to be out at 10am sharp. Right by the lake great views. Yeah I would stay there again. Now the bypass is in less traffic easier to get in with vehicles. Safer to cross the road to the lake.

Older style motel but spacious comfortable room. Needs new pillows though!! Right across the road from the lake and the manager was very helpful with information on our arrival.

A good location from which to explore the many attractions this part of New Zealand has to offer with a lovely view of the lake from the front and minutes from the harbour and cafes.

Very budget.

I chose Taupo as a "home base" for my recent trip to the North Island and found my room at the Colonial Lodge to be wonderful. The rooms are nicely appointed, clean, and comfortable. The spa bathtub was much appreciated after long days of driving to see sights such as the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, the Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours near Matamata, […] and the geothermal park Orakei Korako - Hidden Valley (only 30 minutes drive from Taupo). Comfortable unit. Clean ,well appointed, quiet. Stayed several times before . Will do so again. Helpful management.

Very tidy and close to town center. Just across the road is the lake front. Staff are friendly, and it has free wifi. Very Happy with the spa bath as well!

The room was a great value for the money. Spacious with a separate bedroom and kitchenette, clean, and generally comfortable. It's right next to the lake, so if you just want to relax on the lake the location is great. But it's not terribly close to the city center or other Taupo attractions, about a mile, so you'll want a car to drive there if you […] want to go into the town. just in front of taupo lake,, wonderful stay! clean, nice and friendly staff!

What a fantastic location!! Just a very short walk and you are on the shore of Lake Taupo. Lovely clean, modern accomodation and service from great staff, both my husband and myself would recommend this stay to all.

Manager friendly and helpful. Accommodation clean tidy warm and plenty of hot water.

The hotel was crammed into a row of hotels on a strip across from the lake. There was tons of traffic on the road and difficult to enter and exit from the hotel parking lot.
