We booked a last minute break at the Mercure Gloucester Bowden Hall Hotel for four nights following the Easter weekend. We were very pleased with the room rate offered on Hotels.com. The Hotel is situated down a lane in a village but is close to the M5 and A roads. It is a short drive into Gloucester city centre. It is set in very nice grounds with […] a lake and has a function room and a licence for civil weddings/partnerships. We were checked in promptly. On arriving in our room, we discovered that our toilet would not flush. We reported this immediately to reception who called maintenance. When they found out that they had gone home for the day, they offered us another room. As no more twin rooms were available they offered us a choice of two family rooms. The room was perfectly acceptable with the only downside being that our original room had a lovely view out the front of the Hotel and this one overlooked the back and side. Our room was on the 3rd floor and it was a bit of a walk back to reception. There are no lifts in the Hotel but they do have a wheelchair lift up the stairs to the first floor for guest accessibility. We ate in the restaurant every night and the quality of the food was very good. They offer a set three course meal for £22 or you can order from the a la carte menu. The drinks were a bit pricey but what you would expect to pay in a 4* Hotel. There was a pleasant lounge with high ceilings and ceiling to floor windows to sit in after dinner, if you wished, and a bar that also served snacks. The buffet breakfast was also very good and offered a wide choice to suit all tastes. I used the Hotel swimming pool, spa bath and sauna. The pool isn't that big but it was quiet when I went down so I was able to swim for exercise. The Hotel is suitable for couples, families and business travellers. this is a good hotel for a nice break in the cotswolds but its a bit too old to classify as luxurious. Make sure you use your sat nav, otherwise you will never find it, as there are no signs anywhere.
